Abstract | This paper describes a model for the evaluation of the graduates of the teacher education programs of Tennessee Technological University. The use of the model in program development and improvement for the preparation of teachers, and its application to a special group of 20 individuals teaching science in the middle school grades are also presented. Graduates from the bachelor's and master's level program for the period 1973 through 1978 participated in the study. Information was collected on each subject from four sources: (1) self-evaluative data; (2) principals and supervisory evaluations; (3) satisfaction of students of the graduates; and (4) data from independent trained observers. The findings show that the graduates have exhibited many of the characteristics of good teachers; however, when compared with national samples, they are functioning near the mean. Use of the model in science education and how the findings of this study address the important consideration of program modification are also included. (Author/HM) |
