AbstractAt the request of the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine, a project was initiated to evaluate the current screening process used for entry into three medical technical training courses: Aeromedical Specialist, Environmental Health Specialist, and Physiological Training Specialist. A sample of 1,003 students were administered the General Aptitude Index of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB); the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test; the vocabulary portion of the Word Clue Tests; and the reading speed and comprehension measures of the Appraisal of Reading Versatility, Advanced Test. Identification data and criterion data from the class rosters supplied additional biographical data on each trainee. Three models were developed from these predictor variables. Model 1 contained all test and biographical data. Model 2 contained only the data from the commercial tests. Model 3 contained only data from the ASVAB and the biographical data. It was concluded that Model 1 was the most useful in identifying potential failures and personnel requiring remedical training in medical technical courses. The significant contribution of the commercial tests to the predictor composite warrants their retention in the selection composite even though their use entails an additional expense. (Author/BW)
