| Abstract | In the late 1960's there was the beginning of a movement toward ethnic identity in the United States. Ethnic leaders have typically attributed to the term "ethnicity" certain sociocultural traits. The author of this monograph examines the ethnic movement as both a cultural and socioeconomic phenomenon. Many of the traits attributed to ethnicity are shown to be primarily aspects of class. Historically urban conflicts in America have involved segments of the working class which traditionally comprised large numbers of immigrants. Many conflict situations in contemporary American cities perpetuate the structure of class conflict although the competing parties may carry ethnic labels. This class situation is likely to continue. The ethnic movement is touted by its leaders as shaping a new pluralism, but this author believes that the philosophical underpinnings of the movement are consistent with the ideologies of the "melting pot" and the American dream. It is suggested that combined forces of America's economic and labor situation, educational system, and other factors, have resulted in groups whose ethnicity has been only indirectly instrumental in fixing the social position of their members. Accordingly, he concludes that a new pluralism may not necessarily be ethnically based, and that efforts to genuinely revive ethnic cultural heritages are unlikely to succeed. (Author/GC) |
