AbstractThe Community Development Education Center (CDEC) at William Rainey Harper College serves the educational needs of local government officials by providing workshops and seminars pertaining to significant issues of local government. In order to evaluate past programs and plan for future programs, a survey instrument was sent to former participants and future potential participants. All 422 participants from fall 1974 to fall 1976 were surveyed, with 207 persons responding. Additionally, 225 persons involved in local governmental work responded to a "needs" questionnaire. Of the participant group, 66% represented city or village governments, and most (63%) were in administrative or staff paid positions rather than the elected or appointed posts which comprised 84% of the needs survey respondents. Participants tended to enroll because of brochures or letters received in the mail (69%), or at a supervisor's recommendation (22%). Ratings on past programs varied widely, with no program type rated better than others. Most successful were those offering new ideas and information. Topics preferred by both respondent groups included organizational, financial, and land use planning; assessment of program effectiveness and of community needs; and information on available services and revenue. Detailed survey responses are given and the questionnaires are appended. (RT)
