Abstract	One of the trends in foreign language teaching today seems to be increased emphasis on the development of communicative competence and a new concern for the student as an individual. One technique for stimulating communication is the "rapid-fire question" technique, which involves building up to a speed of 150-200 questions in 50 minutes. This technique fosters competition, thus stimulating students and eliminating periods of silence. Another technique of this kind is independent outside reading followed by group discussion in class. Other techniques involve the use of conversation cards, reproducing television shows in the target language, writing and dramatizing shows, role playing, use of visual aids, the circular narrative (where each student adds one sentence to a story begun by a teacher), problem solving, vocabulary bees, and grammatical "relay races."
