Abstract	Aspects of how a board of trustees is designed to function, how its membership is selected, how it is educated, and how business is conducted are discussed. General characteristics of boards of both public or private institutions are identified, with emphasis on the role and responsibility of the chairman. Suggestions are offered regarding the tenure of chairpersons, relationships to chief executive, trustee meetings, policy making, kinds of trustees, functions of the executive committee, trustee advocacy and support for the board and institution, presidential evaluation, and disclosure of facts. Guidelines for the education of a new trustee and the continuing education of all trustees are offered. (LBH)
