AbstractA sequel to Work in America, the volume of resource papers provides additional data on issues concerning the relationships of work to health, education, and welfare. The report is a planning document which focuses on how the institution of work can be changed to improve the quality of life, to contribute to a more just society, and to strengthen public and private institutions. It is a holistic and humanistic approach which goes beyond job satisfaction. Sixteen leading researchers contribute their findings and perceptions to six main sections dealing with dissatisfaction in the work force, the problems of various demographic groups of workers, the relation between work and health, job redesign and enrichment, the relationship between education and work, and Federal strategies relating to work and welfare. Evidence of increasing numbers of American workers of diverse backgrounds becoming dissatisfied with the quality of their working lives points to the need for more options in job design, more flexible working arrangements, and freer access to and information about jobs. More understanding is needed of the relationship between work and education, without contorting the function of education so that it serves only marketing ends. (EA)
