Abstract | This doctoral dissertation examines the concept of a general education over the past 30 years and presents a rationale for introducing the study of cultural heritage through a study of world literature in the English class. Chapter 1 argues that the study of world literature is an important part of the general education curriculum in a technological age. Chapter 2 reviews three major traditional philosophical systems that have influenced the patterns of American education in the past. Chapter 3 traces the development of the general education curriculum. Chapter 4 explores the status of college and university programs in the 1970's and comments on the role of world literature in these programs. The conclusions drawn from the study demonstrate that English departments are concerned with offering students the best possible literary experiences and with establishing a viable relationship between the past and the present. Some general guidelines are provided by the writer for those whose special province in the field of English is the teaching of world literature. (Author/RB) |
