| Abstract | Reported are results of a survey (1972) to determine trends in residential services for the mentally retarded, with particular focus on residential facilities, community involvement, and placement procedures. Respondents (62% of 211 questionnaires sent) represent public residential care facilities in the United States and Canada, or are state coordinators, members of the President's Committee on Mental Retardation, or specialists. Twenty-two questions request such information as categories of present residential population, percentage of residents employed for renumeration, or waiting list according to categories. Key findings indicate trends such as the following; that possibly one half of all institutionalized could be returned to appropriately programed community living facilities, that residential facility personnel have expertise and knowledge, that attention be given to respite and short-term care programs and to community programs in which institutional residents participate, that parental participation be planned at time of admitting a child, that institutional staff do not cooperate sufficiently with community agencies to train community program coordinators, and that universities should be more involved with residential facilities and intervention programs.
