Abstract	The fourth edition of "The Foundation Directory" lists and describes 5,454 foundations and surveys their grants. The directory was prepared from foundation reports and government records. The foundations listed either have assets of $500.00 or made grants totally at least $25,000.00 in the year of record. Education is the leading beneficiary of foundation support. During the past ten years, an average of 32% of all grants went to education, 15% to international activities, 14% to health, 13% to welfare, 12% to sciences, 9% to humanities and 5% to religion. Foundations located in every state, except Alaska, are included. The greatest concentration is in New York State which has nearly 26% of the listed foundations. Twelve foundations have nearly a third of all foundation assets. Listed, in order of size, they are: The Ford Foundation, Lilly Endowment, The Rockefeller Foundation, The Duke Endowment, Kresge Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, The Pew Memorial Trust, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, The John A. Hartford Foundation, and the Andrew W.
