Abstract | This document reviews the concepts and definitions related to the community services function of the community college. Problems of organizing and financing community service programs are examined, as well as problems of leadership and the question of coordination with the community and within the college itself. Several contemporary issues and challenges are discussed. The author feels that of all community college programs, the community services aspect reflects most clearly the socioeconomic structure of the community. Since community services extend the educational services to community groups that are otherwise not affected by conventional college programs, a variety of new and innovative organizational approaches are often required. This factor may in turn affect the traditional approaches of the entire college. (MC) |
