AbstractThis study tested two hypotheses: (1) the importance attached to the intrinsic aspects of work is negatively related to retirement satisfaction, maximum extension of future time perspective (FTP), and the number of events anticipated in the future; (2) retirement satisfaction is positively related to FTP maximum length and events anticipated. Subjects were 65 while male retirees whose physical and mental health appeared normal and whose retirement income was adequate. Measures of work values and retirement satisfaction, and a blank for listing future events of importance, were used. Findings supported the first hypothesis but not the second. Two alternative interpretations, both relating to self actualization need, were offered for the negative relationship between satisfaction and intrinsic work values. Findings based on unhypothesized data suggested the importance of individual personality in determining retirement adjustment, and of cultural, socioeconomic, and personality factors (as opposed to chronological age alone) in determining FTP. A positive relationship was also found between FTP maximum extension and density. (A bibliography, questionnaires, and 29 tables are included.) (author/ly)
