AbstractIN DELHI, INDIA, TWO STUDIES WERE MADE OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION (N ACH). IN THE FIRST STUDY, 1,000 IX CLASS BOYS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS WERE GIVEN A THEMATIC APPERCEPTIVE MEASURE OF N ACH AND AN ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION INVENTORY. THE RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY ARE DISCUSSED, AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH ARE MADE. THE SECOND STUDY TESTED THE EFFECT OF TWO MOTIVATION TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS ON N ACH, AND ACADEMIC ASPIRATION LEVELS IN PUPILS. AFTER THE TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS WERE COMPLETED, GROUPS OF BOYS COMPLETED A COURSE TO RAISE THEIR ASPIRATIONS, A COURSE TO RAISE THEIR N ACH, BOTH OF THESE, OR NEITHER. RESULTS INDICATED--(1) THE ASPIRATION BOOSTING PROGRAM ALONE DID NOT AFFECT N ACH, AND (2) THE BOYS HAVING BOTH COURSES SHOWED THE GREATEST CHANGE IN N ACH. LIMITATIONS TO THE STUDY ARE (1) VARYING AMOUNTS OF THE CURRICULUM WERE COVERED IN DIFFERENT SCHOOLS, (2) TEACHERS' TECHNIQUES VARIED IN EFFECTIVENESS. FUTURE STUDIES WILL SHOW IF THE IMPACT OF THE N ACH PROGRAM INCREASES WITH TIME, AND IF BOYS OF LOW SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS NOW VALUE EDUCATION MORE THAN BOYS OF MIDDLE AND HIGH SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS.
