Abstract | A DEFINITION OF THE RANGE OF INFLUENCE OF THE UZBEK TEACHER AS AN AGENT OF SOCIOCULTURAL CHANGE IN SOVIET UZBEKISTAN AND A DETERMINATION OF THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER IN TRANSMITTING NEW VALUES AND REINTERPRETING TRADITIONAL CULTURES WERE THE MAJOR PURPOSES OF THE STUDY. AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH WAS USED WHEREIN HISTORICAL-CULTURAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH METHODS WERE USED. POLICIES AND METHODS WHICH SOVIET AUTHORITIES PURSUED OVER A 40-YEAR PERIOD IN UZBEKISTAN HAVE MET WITH QUALIFIED SUCCESS. THE MAJOR CONCLUSION OF THE STUDY WAS THAT THE SCHOOL WAS PERFORMING SPECIFIC AND VITAL ROLES OF CHANGE. THE FORMULATION OF THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES OF THIS POSITION INTO A THEORY THAT DEFINES A MODEL FOR SOCIOCULTURAL CHANGE IS A GENUINE POSSIBILITY, BUT WILL DEPEND UPON FURTHER WORK IN THIS FIELD.
