Abstract	"The changing circumstances in which education develops require a signal reorientation for higher education institutions in Latin American and Caribbean countries.... [New challenges] arise from the diagnosis of the overall condition of the region. From such a diagnosis, one can identify the following issues as central challenges: Higher education's role as a dynamic factor for human development, its place in industrial change and its function in moving towards sustainable development. In short, higher education should be the promoter of modernity in all countries.... It seems useful to have a clear perspective when analysing and bringing the main processes together and highlighting the more outstanding amongst them. Based on available literature or reports, this overview, although incomplete, locates the main aspects with which each country is currently engaged", namely: 1) the growing complexity of education systems (growing differentiation of higher education institutions, private sector growth, increase of teaching staff and graduates), 2) a new order in regional higher education systems (according to their size), 3) coordination patterns that regulate "the relationships among institutions, mainly that of their employees... with government and the relevant markets", and 4) impacts of the dynamics of social and change.
