Abstract | Four units, teacher's notes, and a comprehensive glossary provide background information and activities aimed at raising the awareness of high school students and teachers regarding the nature of the food system and its relationship to nutrition, population, and resources. These non-sequential units analyze the economic and political factors surrounding world food and population issues. Examined are: (1) myths of overpopulation; (2) quantity and quality of food eaten by underfed and overfed nations; (3) the role of large, multinational corporations in the production, cost, and distribution of food; and (4) alternative lifestyles. Designed as a supplement to the existing curriculum, units may be used in social studies and science classes. Informative charts, graphs, and illustrations are also provided. (Author/DC) |
