AbstractMaster's and doctoral degrees are required credentials for entry into the professional class. Although they do not guarantee the recipient an intrinsically rewarding career or a position of leadership, it is increasingly difficult to attain those positions without a graduate degree. The representation of persons of color among graduate degree recipients has therefore become a critical element in reducing achievement and empowerment gaps among racial ethnic groups. In the last academic year for which data are nationally available, 2011-2012, more than 200,000 persons of color earned master's and doctoral degrees at accredited U.S. higher education institutions. The data for this analysis are collected through the completions survey of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) maintained by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The data represents all U.S. postsecondary institutions and represents degrees conferred during the prior academic year (2011-2012). The Top 100 tables in this edition, as well as those accessible through diverseeducation.com, show the total number of degrees awarded for specific minority groups as well as for total minorities with subtotals for women and men in that ethnic group. The tables also include the prior year total along with two percentages: (1) the percentage of degrees in that degree and disciplinary area conferred to members of the target minority group; and (2) the percentage change from the prior year in degrees conferred to the target minority group in the degree/disciplinary area.
