Abstract | It didn't happen overnight. It took more than 20 years of negative public perception, flat student achievement scores, and disengaged students and staff and community members, but finally, the staff and administrators of Barry Goldwater High School--a large, comprehensive, suburban public high school in Phoenix, Arizona--knew that the day had come. Goldwater was at a critical juncture. Its student population was extremely diverse, including a large population of students with special needs, English language learners, and students in the prestigious IB program. A large percentage of students were transient (i.e., 40% coming and going during the school year), and the school drew from a community that was considered to have low to low-middle socioeconomic status. School leaders saw only two options: (1) they could remain static and continue to build "defenses" that justified their entrenched mediocrity; or (2) they could come together to do the hard work of creating a new reality. This article describes how the use of a "purposeful community reflection tool" helped in creating a new reality for the school community. (ERIC). |
