AbstractDisruptive behaviors negatively impact learning by taking time away from classroom instruction (Gottlieb and Polirstok 2005) and may also produce unsafe school environments. This study examined changes in the number of office disciplinary referrals (ODRs) received in public schools prior to and following the schools partnering with one particular alternative education provider. Significant decreases were found for some specific referral categories, including: threat/intimidation, tobacco, weapons (knife), and total state reportable incidents. Decreases in fighting and other disciplinary incidents approached statistical significance. These results illustrate the decreases in some serious ODRs in public schools after providing an alternative setting for at-risk students, potentially indicating increased safety in the public schools. This study provides initial insight into the impact of providing alternative education programs on traditional, public schools. (Contains 1 table and 7 figures.) (As Provided).
