Abstract | The activities described in this article, Prediction Path and Quotation Cafe, are adapted from the IRA book "Building Reading Comprehension Habits in Grades 6-12." They highlight the reading comprehension habit of making inferences and predictions, which can be used across content areas and grade levels. In creating this toolkit of activities, the author analyzed many resources on comprehension strategies and synthesized them into the following six habits: (1) Organizing text information by sculpting the main idea and summarizing; (2) Connecting to background knowledge; (3) Making inferences and predictions; (4) Generating and answering questions; (5) Understanding and remembering word meanings; and (6) Monitoring one's own comprehension.
