Abstract | Interlibrary lending is often overlooked when resource-sharing operations are evaluated. The relevant literature shows a lack of current lending studies. It can be difficult to convince administrators that lending should be considered to be as important as borrowing in spite of the fact that one cannot operate without the other. 26,800 cancelled lending transactions were studied in order to determine the fill rate. Of these, 7068 cancelled transactions were further examined to determine the reasons for cancellation. Twelve percent of cancellations were actually on campus but had not been found. Many factors affect whether or not an item is found at a given time, including consortial obligations, staffing levels, and staff training. By changing or re-emphasizing retrieval methods and verification techniques, lending fill rates can be improved. (Contains 9 notes.) (As Provided). |
