Abstract | For those with disabilities, issues of health are often treated in a reactionary way. This article encourages health literacy, education, and awareness targeted towards those with disabilities in helping them take ownership of their plan for staying healthy, with a focus on weight management. Weight management challenges for people with disabilities occur in every type of living situation: at home, in group living environments, in an apartment with support, or in foster homes. The issues are trapped in principles that create barriers to reaching the same goal: a healthy, fulfilling life for people with disabilities. The author offers several suggestions that can be used to involve those with disabilities in the process of making healthful choices. (Contains 3 resources.) (ERIC). |
