AbstractColleges and universities have a role in preparing graduates for an increasingly interdependent world in which the knowledge of other languages and cultures is a fundamental need. Because of concerns about the nation's readiness to communicate with people in other countries, whether for purposes of trade, diplomacy, defense, or culture, many educators and policy leaders have called for improvements in national foreign language capabilities. Despite these calls to action, there has been little progress, says the author, because universities, states, businesses, and the federal government have been inconsistent in their priorities. By partnering with government and business, the author believes universities are uniquely positioned to advance its response to the nation's needs for globally literate graduates.
