AbstractThe purpose of this article is to draw the attention of sociologists who are working in scientific institutions and instructors who are teaching in higher education, to the materials of the Russian National Census of 2002 as a significant source from which to obtain information about current problems of the sociology of education. The materials of national censuses and selective surveys of the population provide direct information about the basic characteristics of the education of the population. Data have shown that the level of education has been rising from one generation to the next. Women are becoming more educated in comparison with men. At the same time, in the latest period between censuses the figures reflecting education in the age group of forty and younger have gone down a bit. There has been an increase in both absolute and relative numbers of young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine who have acquired only a general primary education. In all age groups from ten to thirty the proportion of people not attending school is higher among males. Among younger rural inhabitants the proportion of people with a professional education is smaller than in their parents' generation. Further study of the materials of the census of 2002 by sociologists and researchers in other social sciences may make it possible to discern in more detail the trends in present-day Russian education and to contribute to the formulation of administrative decisions designed to raise the educational level of all Russians in accordance with current demands.
