AbstractThe Seeds of Peace program began in August 1993 when forty-eight Egyptian, Israeli, and Arabic boys met at a summer camp in Maine for a two-week coexistence program that gave them the opportunity not only to meet their "enemies" for the first time, but to live with them in cabins, share meals, and participate in typical summer camp activities. In addition, these boys were involved in daily dialogue sessions that allowed them the opportunity to discuss, analyze, and understand the experiences they and their counterparts had had as a result of their conflict, while at the same time exploring related impressions and feelings. At the end of the program, these forty-eight boys were invited to attend the signing of the Declaration of Principles on the White House lawn. Since that time, Seeds of Peace has brought an increasing number of youth to Maine, boys as well as girls, from a growing number of countries and conflict regions. Although two-thirds of the program continues to focus on the Middle East, Seeds of Peace has developed a model for coexistence that, when adapted appropriately, allows young people from a given conflict region to work on their differences collaboratively toward a transformation that promotes understanding and respect between the conflicting parties. With the right motivation and support, young people can help transform the most intractable conflicts into more productive modes of interaction. Communication and collaboration are key in this process, laying the groundwork for sustainable peace. (Contains 12 notes.) (ERIC).
