Abstract | The U.N. World Food Program fed about 110 million people around the world last year, including 15.6 million children who receive their meals at school. The United States provides money for school feeding programs that is awarded to the U.N. program and other relief agencies. Judith Lewis, U.S.-relations director for the World Food Program, said that this year, they're in serious trouble because of the deficit in the federal budget. Ms. Lewis agreed to launch the 19-cents-a-day campaign to feed students in poor nations at Northwest Rankin High School. Senior Bryce Whitley, who interned at Ms. Lewis' Washington office, led the first kickoff event for the school fund-raising drive. She organized a school assembly, and charged 19 cents admission. She displayed nutritious biscuits and other foods the program offers schoolchildren overseas. (Author). |
