Abstract | The modern role of New Zealand's University Grants Committee (UGC) in relation to universities and the Department of Education is examined, with emphasis on the historical and political factors resulting in the demise of the University of New Zealand and bringing the UGC into being. Recent loss of some autonomy as a result of financial exigency is also discussed. (MSE) |
