Abstract | This experimental 2 x 4 ANOVA study addressed the effects of marijuana-based prevention messages delivered to adult college students. The study examined the variables of sex assigned at birth, by prevention messages to determine the impact of media messages to influence internalized beliefs about marijuana. This study is unique in that it focused on internalized norms of marijuana in a non-marijuana-using population of adult learners in the larger continuum of colleges between the ages of 18-32. The study applied the theory of psychological reactance and the gateway hypothesis to theorize the rationale for different responses to prevention messages and the ability to effect a change in the college student's internalized norms of marijuana as compared to control groups. The potential change was measured by the Perceived Importance of Marijuana to the College Experience Scale (PIMCES). The study did not support a main effect of sex assigned at birth or a significant interaction of sex assigned at birth by prevention message. The research found sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis for prevention messages, and a post-hoc analysis supported a significant difference between the control group and the virtual assistant group. The findings support that the viewing of prevention messages that utilize a thematic narrative and employ health consequences increased psychological reactance. Furthermore, these messages were effective at attempts to control the behavior, consistent with the observed lower scores for the internalization of the use of marijuana as part of the college experience.
