Abstract | Minority teachers are not in abundance in our nation. For the few that exist (compared to the vast number of Caucasian teachers), some are moving to small and rural predominantly White communities. For a person of color, this can bring a set of challenges unique to that person which can determine their desire to stay. Inquiry into the challenges, sustaining features, and needs of these teachers is critical to developing strategies and structures to support them in cultivating longevity in those rural schools and communities. This study utilizes hermeneutic phenomenology in an effort to discover the perceptions and lived experiences of nine teachers of color who live and work in small or rural monocultural Midwestern communities. This study seeks to address the overarching question: What are the lived experiences of teachers of color who live and work in a small or rural monocultural community? There are two sub questions derived from this study to answer: What challenges do teachers of color in diasporic settings experience as marginalized persons in the teaching profession? What conditions do teachers of color identify as necessary professional support to proceed and succeed in diasporic settings based on their personal experiences? Through one-on-one interviews and a focus group session, the minority teachers unveil their life story of living as a minority teacher in small or rural Midwestern communities without homeland cultural amenities.
