AbstractThe folk high schools of Denmark and other Scandinavian countries are so unique and contain so much of interest to all who are concerned in the preparation of young men and women for higher and better living and for more efficient citizenship that, although two or three former bulletins of this bureau have been devoted to a description of these schools and their work, the purpose of this bulletin is to give a more comprehensive account of the subject. For the sake of reference, the following facts are noted: (1) Denmark consists of 15,042 square miles, which is very nearly equal to the combined areas of Massachusetts and New Jersey; (2) The population of Denmark is 2,588,919, which is almost identical to the population of New Jersey in 1910; (3) The monetary unit is the "krone," equal to about 27 cents of American money; and (4) The Danish foot equals 12.35 inches; the Danish mile equals 4 English miles; and the Danish pound equals 1.1 pounds avoirdupois. This bulletin is divided into two parts. Part I, The Educational System of Denmark, reports on: (1) Historical development; (2) Organization and administration of education; (3) Elementary education; (4) Secondary education; and (5) University and vocational education. Part II, The Danish People's High School, covers the following topics: (1) Origin of the people's high schools; (2) Growth of the people's high school; (3) The schools and their life; (4) Aims, curricula, and methods; (5) Influence and results; (6) People's high schools in other countries; and (7) Conclusion. The following are appended: (1) Statistical tables; and (2) Bibliography. An index is also included. Individual sections contain footnotes. (Contains 41 tables.)
