AbstractThe first comparative study of the spread of mass education around the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this unique new book uses a bottom-up focus and demonstrates, to an extent not appreciated hitherto, the gulf between the intentions of the government and the reality on the ground. This book is divided into four parts. Part I, The British Isles, contains the following: (1) Citizenship, Moral Education and the English Elementary School (S. Wright); (2) Elite Education and the Development of Mass Elementary Schooling in England, 1870-1930 (H. Ellis); and (3) Faith and Nationhood: Church, State and the Provision of Schooling in Ireland, 1870-1930 (D. Raftery and M. Relihan). Part II, Continental Europe, contains the following: (4) From the Zwergschule (One-Room Schoolhouse) to the Comprehensive School: German Elementary Schools in Imperial Germany and the Weimar Republic, 1870-1930 (G. Budde); (5) "Schools are Society's Salvation": The State and Mass Education in France 1870-1930 (J. F. Chanet); and (6) Russia and the Soviet Union: Schooling, Citizenship and the Reach of the State, 1870-1945 (B. Eklof). Part III, The Wider World, contains the following: (7) "To Become Good Members of Civil Society and Patriotic Americans": Mass Education in the United States, 1870-1930 (E. Berg); (8) Primary Education and the Construction of Citizenship in Brazil, 1870-1930: Progress and Tensions (M. C. Soares de Gouvea and A. F. Schueller); and (9) The Role of Mass Education in Nation Building in the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic, 1870-1930 (N. Cicek). Part IV, The Colonial Empires, contains the following: (10) "Education for Every Son and Daughter of South Africa": Race, Class and the Compulsory Education Debate in the Cape Colony (S. E. Duff); and (11) India's Trials with Citizenship, Modernisation and Nationhood (N. Kumar). An index is included. (ERIC).
