AbstractTeaching adults is a specialist area. Current education policy defines adult learners as those over 19. However these days if one teaches in some parts of the further education sector one may find teaching students from age 14 upwards. Adult learners may be studying to improve their skills and qualifications for work, or to progress to further study, or they may have chosen to learn for their own personal development in their own time. This paper presents answers to the following questions: (1) What is adult and further education?; (2) Who are the learners?; (3) What skills do teachers of adults need?; (4) What work is available?; (5) What qualifications do individuals need?; (6) How can they find an initial training course?; (7) Once they're qualified, how do they keep up-to-date?; (8) What counts as Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?; and (9) What's in it for them? (ERIC).
