AbstractThis publication focuses on professional development, a key element of school reform. In order to improve instruction and learning, schools need to increase the capacity of teachers to promote academic excellence in their classrooms. As part of their school and district plans, educators need to include professional development for teachers that is ongoing, school-based, collaborative, and focused on student learning. This investment in teachers' professional growth will better enable schools to attract, motivate, and sustain quality teachers. The two schools featured in this publication provide examples of professional development that rely on a governance model of distributive staff leadership. In both schools teachers are key decision makers in how professional development is structured and implemented. Appended are: (1) References; (2) Resources; and (3) Guide to School Visits. [This paper was supported by The Clark Foundation.] (ERIC).
