Abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate international female doctoral students' perceptions of the challenges they faced in a foreign university, and their strategies for success. The theoretical framework underlying this study focused on the need for learner analysis to aid the design of effective instruction. The participants in this study were four international female doctoral students from four different countries enrolled in a western university in the United States. A qualitative methodology was used and in-depth interviews with the participants identified the unique contributions as well as insights gained from the international female doctoral students' experiences. This research study uncovered gaps in the areas of motivation, knowledge, and organizational barriers in the international female doctoral student experience. Recommendations and suggestions for future research were discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
