Abstract | "The Northian", a Canadian magazine for teachers in Indian, Eskimo and northern schools, was located in the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. The article "Education: The Mixture as Before" was an examination of the educational trends across Canada in the wake of the Hall-Denis Report. The article sought to confront the educational expectations and underlying assumptions of such radically new concepts as: (1) the child-oriented (child-centred) approach; (2) unstructured teaching methods; and (3) ungraded and open-concept schools. The main conclusion of the article was that these admirable attempts to shake the schools free of the traditional rigidity of the system were fore-doomed because of the entrenched powers of that system.
