| Abstract | Education is a fundamental value of the people of Florida, whose state constitution even calls for a "high-quality system of free public schools." But rather than live up to this commitment, the state--led by Governor Jeb Bush and a Republican legislature--has embarked on a series of programs that undermine public education. This report examines the following issues in reference to the state of Florida: (1) Vouchers and Tuition Tax Credits; (2) Homeschooling; (3) Testing and Graduation; (4) Class Size; and (5) Edison and Pension Funds. Florida has consistently been failing its commitment to public education at the expense of its school children. Since 1998, Florida has continued to rank near the bottom in terms of adequately funding its public schools. By 2003, according to Education Week's annual report card, Quality Counts, Florida ranked 46 out of 50 states and received a grade of D+ for adequately funding its public schools. This document provides evidence that the state of Florida is not prioritizing when it comes to the public education of the children. The following are appended: (1) Continuing Investigations of Florida's Voucher Programs; and (2) Florida's Voucher Hall of Shame. (ERIC). |
