AbstractThis report presents findings from a national poll that examined the attitudes of U.S. residents about and commitment to their local public schools. The poll and focus groups investigated the importance of public schools as a community resource, the role of individual citizens in solving community problems and addressing community needs, community involvement in supporting and improving local public schools, and general reactions to the concept of local education funds. Respondents were very willing to become more involved in supporting and improving their local public schools. They viewed public schools as a resource benefitting the entire community. They considered improving the quality of education a top priority. While concern about education and the quality of public schools was high, so was respondents' willingness to get involved to help improve schools. To improve local public schools, respondents identified solutions entailing more community effort and more community support. Respondents reacted positively to the concept of local education funds (LEFs) and were interested in donating time and money to such organizations. LEFs are community-based organizations that help develop and implement local public school improvement strategies, broker resources, and award grants; independent of the school districts they serve, LEFs bring together a wide range of stakeholders and serve a significant population of disadvantaged students. Despite respondents' focus on education and willingness to become more involved, challenges remain in fully engaging community involvement in and support for local public schools. The survey is attached. (SM)
