AbstractAfter-school programs have the potential to keep children safe and out of trouble and can help to improve the academic performance of the increasing numbers of participating children. This report presents positive research on after-school programs and examples illustrating the potential of high-quality after-school activities to keep children safe, out of trouble, and learning. The report presents empirical and anecdotal evidence of successful programs, identifies key components of high-quality programs and effective program practices, and showcases exemplary after-school and extended learning models. The report is presented in three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the potential of after-school programs, focusing on their potential impact to reduce juvenile crime; to improve academic achievement; to support children's social development and their relationships with adults and peers; and to strengthen schools, families, and communities. Chapter 2 highlights the components of exemplary after-school programs, including goal setting, strong management, and sustainability; high-quality after-school staffing; attention to safety, health, and nutrition issues; effective partnerships with community and other organizations; strong family involvement; enriching learning opportunities; linkages between school-day and after-school personnel; and evaluation of program progress and effectiveness. Chapter 3 describes 10 exemplary after-school programs. A list of resources for after-school programs is appended. (Contains 110 references.) (KB)
