Abstract	The Alcohol and Drug Defense (ADD) program provides federal funds authorized by the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act to states and local education authorities. ADD is designed to help schools prevent students from abusing drugs and alcohol and provide intervention services for students who use, or are at risk of using, drugs and alcohol. Efforts in the Wake County (North Carolina) Public School System (WCPSS) include Drug Abuse Resistance Education and the Coordinated Assistance Program for Students. This study looked at the impact of the program through surveys of high school students, school staff, and parents. Survey results showed that students' use of marijuana had increased while use of alcohol had declined slightly while nearly all parents (93%) agreed that their child had sufficient knowledge of dangers of alcohol and drugs, only half (51%) agreed that the school information had helped their child say "no." The study concludes that the WCPSS clearly made significant efforts to prevent student substance abuse. However, survey results indicate that greater efforts will be required if the impact of substance abuse on students and schools is to be eliminated.
