Abstract | This book presents a collection of public addresses given by the president of the University of Notre Dame (Indiana) between 1987 and 1991 on the current issues affecting higher education in general and Catholic higher education in particular. The essays suggest the need to raise awareness of moral considerations in preparing students for the professions and the need to promote programs directed toward increasing student involvement in social justice. Also, the writer explores various ethical issues involving matters of the broadest social concern, including the control of foreign and domestic violence; the complex questions surrounding the ever-changing interactions of science, technology, and society; and the ethical dimensions of life in the professions. Speeches are presented within three categories. Speeches addressing the nature of the Catholic University are: "The Faith Mission of Catholic Higher Education"; "Revise and Dissent"; and "The DuBois Lecture on American Catholic Higher Education." Essays dealing with current world challenges are "Discourse Between the Two Cultures: Science, Religion, and Humanities"; "Ethics in the Workplace"; "A Harvest of Questions: Chemicals and the Food Chain"; and "The Control of Violence, Foreign, and Domestic: Some Ethical Lessons from Law Enforcement". Essays addressing challenges within the university are: "The University and Cultural Progress"; "Some Guidelines for Social Justice Education"; "Campus Policing Symposium: Keynote Address"; "Statement on Athletics"; and "Aspiring to Greatness."
