Abstract | Focusing primarily on library, information service, and archive school faculty, this paper discusses the significant implications of preparing the trainers in the information professions for performance commensurate with the demands of the field. Topics discussed include: (1) particular needs that must be met in preparing information professionals; (2) the criteria for trainers based on qualities and requirements for satisfactory performance as trainers; (3) staffing the educational institution with faculty members by identifying practitioners of long standing, with good experience, and/or identifying newer graduates, based on their promise during formal education; (4) the substance of training, including the aforementioned qualities and requirements, plus basic education, professional knowledge in information work, knowledge in supportive disciplines, pedagogic competence, research capabilities, and practical experience; (5) avenues of training, e.g., formal education and training, short courses, seminars, workshops, in-service training, self-directed study programs, and practical experience; and (6) evaluation of trainers through accreditation of the institution (United States) or programs (England) or individual evaluation.
