Abstract | The study of wine offers possibilities for teaching a variety of topics in the high school or college French class: geography, history, grape varieties, food-wine combinations, the art of appreciating and distinguishing wines, the wine industry, and French daily life. The development of a slide-tape presentation is described in detail. Resource materials, information sources, the general structure of a lesson, notes on characteristics of particular regions, suggestions for grammar and vocabulary exercises, sample assignments, the use of realia and printed matter as instructional materials, and classroom and field activities are outlined. Wine tasting, at the college level, and food study are recommended as effective ways of gaining student interest. Adaptation of materials for secondary study is discussed. Two complete lessons in French are appended. The first includes the script for a slide-tape presentation, vocabulary work, and various types of exercises; the second is an audio-motor unit using menus and wine lists. (MSE) |
