AbstractIn the summer of 1983, a centralized microcomputer laboratory was established on the Sarasota County Vocational Technical Center campus. Computers (IBM PCs, APPLE IIes, and TRS-80s) were installed and the teacher who had written the program proposal was chosen to teach the course of instruction to be offered by the laboratory. When classes began in August of 1983, instructors were strongly encouraged to arrange times for themselves and their students to receive instruction. The curriculum was structured for 12.5 to 15 hours of instruction in computer literacy. The course introduces computer terminology, the computers, their functions, their disk operating systems, and their startup procedures, along with handling of disks and communicating with the computer. Also taught are the concepts of programming, essential commands in BASIC, and other functions. The students then practice using the computers by running and interacting with various public domain sample programs; students end the course by constructing a filing system applicable to their chosen careers. The computer center is planning to develop a software library that may be used by students in the microcomputer center or checked out for later use. The center is also constantly revising the computer literacy course to meet students' needs and suit their abilities. The course has been taken by 85 percent of the students, and 80 percent of those rated it favorably. The program is continuing for a second year. (In addition to a program description, the bulk of this document contains course goals and objectives, a glossary of computer terminology, procedures and BASIC programs, and evaluation results in the form of data tables.)
