AbstractA survey of the 5,278 students who either graduated (N=3,095) or withdrew (N=2,183) from the Manitoba community colleges during 1978 was conducted during 1979 to determine: (1) the employment status of the students; (2) their earnings; (3) the number of weeks spent in the labor market before and after college enrollment; (4) the number of weeks spent finding a job after leaving college; and (5) the relationship between the skills learned at college and students' jobs. Survey data were analyzed in terms of college attended, graduate or non-graduate status, sex, age, source of income while in school, course of study (i.e., two-year diploma or one-year certificate), and educational attainment prior to community college attendance. Major findings, based on a 62% response rate from graduates and a 41% response rate from non-graduates, revealed that the non-graduate unemployment rate (7.6%) was about twice as large as that experienced by the graduates (3.3%), and that the non-graduates took about two weeks longer to find their first job. Only 41% of the non-graduates were in jobs related to their training, as compared to 83% of the graduates. The salaries, number of jobs held, ratings of job satisfaction, and plans for continuing their education of the graduates and non-graduates were similar. (JP)
