| Abstract | This volume presents the contents of a conference held with scholars concerning their perceptions of some of the critical issues affecting black Americans. The formal presentations and the discussion that followed are reproduced in this book. The sessions explored several major forces impinging on the lives of the black and the poor and developed broad approaches to deal positively with those forces. What developed from the sessions was not a list of proposed solutions but a comprehensive examination of where the black person stands in the present social and economic milieu and a look at his prospects for the future. There were sessions addressing the following issues: (1) economic policy and income security, (2) personal security, law enforcement and the administration of justice, (3) the political process and (4) educational policy. Among the specific issues which were discussed are the following: (1) the economic outlook and employment prospects for blacks, (2) crime in the black community, (3) drug problems in the black community, (4) the political process and black liberation, (5) full employment, (6) critical issues in the education of minorities, (7) public school reform, and (8) integration.
