Abstract | As part of a broad effort to develop qualities and attitudes of mind implied by phrases such as "global perspective" and "worldmindedness," this paper considers the main practical and theoretical questions which are likely to arise in developing a world studies unit in secondary schools. Three major sections comprise the paper. The first section surveys the main subject areas of world studies and includes an overview. This section is concerned with factual content which takes the form of a series of brief quotations from authoritative writings, novels and plays, and from young people, and also includes a series of actual examination questions which a pupil might be expected to answer at the end of a course. In the second section, methods and materials, five general approaches in which world studies may be undertaken in practice are outlined. Educational objectives are discussed in the third and final section. (SJM) |
