| Abstract | The basic point which this discussion attempts to emphasize is that the political perception of urbanization in Tropical Africa tends to be dominated by concern with urban unemployment (and its social and political consequences) as the major, visible and explosive byproduct of the acceleration of rural-urban migration which has been one of the most striking features of the postwar period, and particularly the period since independence. Contents include: (1) definitions of the terms "urban" and "tropical Africa;" (2) the African urban inheritance; (3) Exploding cities in unexploding economies; (4) the rural-urban relationship; (5) the African Urban Experience; (6) the politics of urbanization.
