Abstract | The study explores the psychological and sociological characteristics of two groups of women: those who choose careers in stereotypic masculine occupations versus those who elect careers in stereotypic feminine fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, counseling, homemaking, library, and secretarial work. The sample consisted of 1646 upperclass college women who had the time and opportunity to develop reasonably firm career goals but had not undergone many goal modifications due to various external circumstances, e.g. marriage or children. Of the total sample, just 109 expressed career aspirations in nontraditional fields. Results suggest that women perceive a narrow range of career possibilities because they are fearful of venturing into a man's world; in addition, higher education has done little to expand women's awareness or interests beyond the sex stereotyped career roles. The author references other studies which indicate that counselors in higher education are ineffective in dealing with women students who are considering male-dominated careers.
