Abstract | Perceptions of media violence and comparisons of those perceptions for different viewer subgroups were examined in a study of fifth-grade boys' perceptions of selected television scenes which differed in kind and degree of violence. Two parallel videotapes were edited to contain scenes of different kinds of physical violence, a practice scene, and two control scenes (nonviolent). Subjects were grouped as lower class white, lower class black, middle class white, and upper class white. The test instrument assessed degree of violence, acceptability of the behavior, liking of content, degree of arousal, and perceived reality. Data analysis included a factor analysis of test items, a comparison of subgroup differences in stimuli response, an examination of the differences in types of violence, and a check on relative perceptions of the control and experimental scenes. Boys from lower income families perceived violent scenes as more real and more acceptable, liked watching such scenes more, and liked watching all scenes more than middle class boys. Lower income blacks saw less violence in violent scenes than lower income whites; however, this may be an extension of the socio-economic difference, rather than a racial one. Scenes of violence with weapons were judged more violent than those without. (MT) |
