Abstract | Intelligence makes man unique. To date man's use of this intelligence has been deficient. The deficit lies in the one-sided development of his problem-solving capacity; that is, an enormous growth has occurred in technological capabilities without a corresponding gain in solutions to social problems. This deficit is particularly significant because intelligence is, to a great degree, a product of the social environment. Important to the development of the brain is proper nutrition, a clean environment to reduce the effects of disease, adequate and varied sensory stimulation, and rich adult-infant social interactions. Yet, given the satisfactory development of the brain, the contrast between our intellectual prowess in understanding and manipulating the physical world and our insensitivity to (if not debased judgments of) the social purposes of that manipulation points up the perversion of intelligence. Today the problems for mental health and human development are (1) the Viet Nam war, (2) racism, and (3) the gross inequalities in access to resources between and within nations. (WD) |
